Simon and Schuster has a listing for a book titled The Princess and the Popstar, to be released next August 2012, which would make this align with the usual date for the fall Barbie movie. The front cover of the book says "Based on the Movie."
The following is a summary from the page:
The following is a summary from the page:What little girl hasn't dreamed of trading in her life for a more exciting one, even for just a day? In this charming story, a world-weary rock star and a stifled princess switch places, but aren't prepared for what happens next. And everyone's favorite actress—Barbie—plays both roles! After girls read the story, they can play out the scenes with the reusable stickers and three panoramic play scenes attached at the front and back of the book.

Barbie takes on a big challenge in her new movie—she plays two roles! In one, she’s a princess who feels bored and stifled by her very regimented life. In the other, she’s a rock star who is weary of touring, press junkets, and performances. When the girls decide to switch roles, they get a taste of how the other lives. Filled with memorable songs, this is sure to be a hit with Barbie fans!
I don't know what to say. It seems like such a modern Princess and the Pauper, except that it's still so different. I mean no offense, but I must admit I am wondering whether Mattel really has lost this much touch. Two things: One: the life of a princess and a popstar are already so different from a normal girl's, so this is kind of saying that each character in this movie is bored/has a non-exciting life, which I just don't get, seeing as they are princesses and popstars. Two: about Barbie taking on a "big challenge...she plays two roles"...yeah, I think she had done that in Princess and the Pauper? I don't mean to be negative about this movie before it comes out, but this is kind of like when they said A Christmas Carol was "Barbie's First Holiday Movie." And I was just really hoping for an old-fashioned story. I must say though the cover is pretty on the book, especially the purple popstar.
Also as a small bit of trivia, there was a VeggieTales movie titled The Princess and the Popstar.
Edit: Here is a second cover. I think the bracelet must be a plus that comes with the movie, and also Barbie has a purple guitar and the purple girl has a pink guitar (above):
