Barbie's siblings
Okay, I'm sure all of us know Barbie's sisters names. Skipper, Stacie, Kelly, and Krissy. And of course there's her absent brother Todd and his absent twin Tutti who became Stacie so we'll forget about Todd and Tutti for now. I've always wanted more Skipper and Krissy, namely in the movies since both Stacie and Kelly have made several appearances.

Well, Barbie.com is putting the spotlight on Barbie's sisters, but something's different. Well, for one thing, Skipper's gotten a makeover. She's now brunette with purple highlights, dunno if I'm a fan, but at least she's remembered.

And the thing that really floored me: Kelly's officially been renamed to Chelsea. All I can say is WTF? Ever since I've been into Barbie dolls (which is about all of "Kelly's" existence since I was born in '93 and she was introduced in '95) , I've always been given Kelly dolls to go along with my Barbie dolls. And think about it, Kelly was a big part in the original three Barbie movies: Nutcracker, Rapunzel, and Swan Lake. And of course there's Tommy, but he's Ken's little brother so he doesn't matter right now.

I can deal with Skipper's hair color because I remember that for Barbie's 50th Skipper was supposed to be "coming home to celebrate" and I had been waiting for it, but I never saw any Skipper dolls so at least she finally has something.

And yes! I love Stacie! I had a doll of her black friend Janet, it was this sleepover/camping set thing and each girl had a Winnie the Pooh character on their pajamas. Janet had Tigger. And the last doll my nana gave me for Christmas was this adorable Stacie, Janet, and Lila dancing in the rain set that I refuse to open or give away.

But to be honest, I'm so connected with Kelly because she's really Barbie's main sister. Remember how much merchandise Mattel sold with Barbie and Kelly? The Kelly and Tommy versions of Wizard of Oz dolls? And does anyone remember on the original Barbie website that there was a special section dedicated to Kelly and her friends? Yep. I 'm probably the only one, but it was there.

Personally, I'm tired of Mattel now. The dolls aren't the same quality they were when even the first movies came out and every time I go to Target or Toys R Us, I 'm just disappointed with the dolls and the themes. The only things with promise are the I Can Be dolls and the collector dolls.

Opinions? Here's the "sister" section of the site. I want games with Skipper and Stacie. I refuse to acknowledge this Chelsea girl. Her name is Kelly and that's what I'm calling her. My future daughter(s) will know her as Kelly, too, not Chelsea.

omg yes! I agree and I'm sure everyone agrees!
1) I wonder why they didn't include Krissy
2) Kelly is Kelly period. They are stupid to change her name!
3) Seriously, what ever happened to Todd and Tutti, they were her twin siblings like way back in the day. I wasn't born then but I did read about it. I guess they got dropped cuz no one cared?
4) Remember Francie the cousin?

I think I officially HATE Barbie now. Mattel can just go bankrupt now for all I care. I never want to see another Barbie related thing ever again if THIS is how Mattel is going to butcher things.

Maybe I'm just overreacting, but this is ridiculous. It's like changing Mickey Mouse's name to Marco or something like that. I mean, I completely get why they maybe did away with Krissy. She wasn't really iconic. BUT KELLY IS FREAKING KELLY!! I was born in 87, so I remember the days when it was mostly Stacie (and I remember hating how she and Skipper were fazed out), but I also remember the debut of Kelly perfectly! It was sort of a big deal really. So after 15-16 years? What in the world are they thinking!? Who's running that place? Monkeys? No...actually that would be an insult to monkeys >:|

Yeah I agree with teh Kelly thing. I was so shocked! And by the way, who is Krissy?
queenmarytwoqueenmarytwo on January 31st, 2011 03:17 pm (UTC)
Krissy is the baby sister, the baby (literally) of the family. She was created in 2000ish.

I saw that about Kelly/Chelsea awhile back (a month maybe, someone bought the doll set with Skipper and Chelsea and mentioned the name change). It rather surprised me, my sister and I even talked about it when we saw them in person. I don't get it, but it didn't bother me too much. I can't figure out the point though, unless they fancy a new generation of little girls are just getting into the dolls and it felt time for a rename?

Okay, I actually like the new Skipper. I guess it's because it's nice to see a member of Barbie's family with a slightly different hair colour; makes her stand out from the others a bit more (especially now Stacie's a bit older). Oh, and I'm glad she and Stacie are making a comeback. They're my favourite Barbie sisters and it's nice to see them around again.

But the business with Kelly... no. Just, no. She'll always be Kelly to me (or Shelly, since that's what we called her in Europe). Heck, I still collected Kelly dolls during the period when I wasn't collecting Barbie dolls. Also, what is the point in changing her name? Seriously, WHY? Why keep the other sisters' names but change hers? It just doesn't make sense.

I'm pretty much the same, really; I'm nearly done with Playline Barbie. I'm more interested in the collectors' dolls now. They may cost a lot more, but they're excellent quality, they don't all look the same and they actually wear something besides pink.

I agree! I like Skipper's hair, but I am very confused about why they would change Kelly's name :\.

I am also looking at the Collector's dolls a lot too now, as well as the I Can Be dolls Ellie mentioned.

I'm sure that's exactly what they were thinking, and I might buy it more if we didn't still have SKIPPER. Really, Skipper? And I know a lot more Kellys than I know Barbaras... I don't think I can name any Barbaras under the age of 50, frankly, and I don't know anyone that goes by "Barbie," so are they going to rename her, too?
queenmarytwoqueenmarytwo on January 31st, 2011 03:21 pm (UTC)
I say we all write them letters or petition or something cuz seriously, they've forgotten about the old generation who actually care about all the original things about Barbie
Sailor Donut: Mother of Pink!jeweledeyes on January 31st, 2011 08:42 pm (UTC)
Seriously, I have a list a mile long of things I want to complain to Mattel about, but this one takes the cake. At this point, any letter I send is going to be like,

"Dear Mattel,

• You suck for firing Kelly Sheridan
• You suck because you can't get your continuity together on Monster High
• You suck because you're discontinuing all the historical American Girl dolls
• The quality control on all your doll lines sucks

But this business with renaming the Kelly doll "Chelsea"? That is ENOUGH of this bull. Good day, sirs! I said good day!"

They're not getting any more of my money, I'm not even kidding.

I wish they could get this message, I wish I knew who is making these decisions and why.
majorabbey: worried disappointedmajorabbey on February 2nd, 2011 05:55 pm (UTC)
My list is pretty much the same, but it also includes:

- You suck for making it so hard to find Monster High dolls in the UK
- You suck for making every new Barbie movie like a charicature of a tween TV show
- You suck for not making a proper Major Mint doll (one day, I WILL get past this, I swear.)

... And now this. As you said, we still have Skipper, and that's hardly a common name nowadays, is it?
Sailor Donut: Failjeweledeyes on February 2nd, 2011 08:58 pm (UTC)
I've never heard "Skipper" as a name. Unless you count Gilligan's Island, but he was only called "Skipper" because he was, well, a skipper. XD
skippercollectoskippercollecto on February 2nd, 2011 11:09 pm (UTC)
since i'm supposedly the expert
Years ago I wrote Mattel as to why it chose the name "Skipper." The response I got was simply that it was considered a cute nickname in the 1960s, although I've never known anyone with the nickname.
I have noticed over the years, especially in the 60s, that a lot of her clothing has had nautical stripes or a sailboat theme.
It's been my assumption since I began collecting that her given name begins with an S. The following girls' names beginning with an S were popular in the late 50s and early 60s: Sharon, Susan and Sandra, and to a lesser extent, Stephanie. I grew up knowing lots of girls with those names, which is why I selected them as possibilities.
On a related note, I've always considered Stacie and Tutti to be the same person.

so here is real deal
In USA sorry if different elsewhere but this is what i know. For undisclosed reasons in Barbie universe a mattel subisdy they offed tutti and todd didn't tell us how i will save skipper for last cause i have few theories on something. Then there is Stacie who aparently hit growth spurt in last 5 yrs she was 7.5 inches now she is 9.25 inches. I don't think about that. Stacie in usa is not tutti i know Canada kinda has some people mixed up but we wont over think it. Now next one i can provide a bit more info on Chelsea is not Kelly. One if she was Kelly would not still be being sold places. At time Kelly has no new dolls but mattel is up to stuff Kelly like her youngest sister Krissy are curently on hitus like skipper was for couple years so we could get to know knew memeber of family. Now why the introduced Chelsea way they did is beyond me. It was stupid they should have uped Kelly and Krissy's age and made Chelsea the new newborn Kelly had a club when they put her on beak. But i digress. Just look at Kelly and Chelsea dolls next to each other you can just tell their different kids. Now Skipper has me a little upset but she is in late teens you know how you were that age looking back we weren't as smart as we thought so i figure skippers in that stage. I was born in 85 exactly were i got to enjoy and watch family aditions come though kinda funny how closely Stacie then Kelly were introduced. But back to Skipper i can fix her hair or buy her a wig but why the blank did they shrink her when grew Stacie. Now to thing that's leaving facts so here is my theory whatever killed tutti and todd has started to eat at Skipper's mind forcing her to rebel so much that she dhed her hakr black with streak of color the color cause she is still barbie's sister. Now i get feeling it wont be long till all six girls are in a movie meanwhile no one has forgotten Kelly even 10 year olds ask about when their will be new Kelly doll. Kelly is preschool aged which she was uped to when decide to introduce Krissy Kelly was late toddler when introduced where as Chelsea is 5-7 years old. Now i can't say how long before anything big happens as mattel dose their best to prevent leaks. But shrinking skipper made about as much sense as a dog flying without a plane. Im sick of pig line.
